ALBANY, Ore. - At the Oaks Apartments in Albany, the management can fly their own flag advertising one and two bedroom apartments - but residents have been told they can't fly any flags at all.

Jim Clausen flies the American flag from the back of his motorcycle. He has a son in the military heading back to Iraq, and the flag - he said - is his way of showing support.

"This flag stands for all those people," said Clausen, an Oaks Apartment resident. "It stands for the people that can no longer stand - who died in wars. That's why I fly this flag."

But to Oaks Apartment management, Clausen said, the American flag symbolizes problems.

He was told to remove the red, white and blue from both of his rides, or face eviction.

Quite honestly, I'm offended by those that attempt to take away others rights using "don't offended me" mantra. Do you think I could get the ACLU to take my case seriously. Perhaps but I think they would see the conflict-of-interest and say they can't represent both parties in the "I want to fly the flag" and the "The flag offends me" issue.

As I see it, there is a philosophical conflict-of-interest that is the root of all these "rights" issues. The Bill of Rights drew a line in the sand and the ACLU as well as our current government wish to muddy or erase that line at their discretion whenever it interferes with their agenda.

Take for instance, did taking the "In God We Trust" motto off the new one dollar coin make it more or less valuable? So if I say, "I want the dollar coin to have the In God We Trust" and "I want that same coin to have $1.00 worth of value" My request is rejected and I am offended in both cases.

Could it be that our government does not want us to trust God? Let me tell you, I sure don't trust our government to have concerns for me or my family. But I don't have a choice. Perhaps when our founding fathers authored the documents that this great country was built on, the separation of church and state meant our leaders should not think they are gods. Too late.

You can take God off our soon to be worthless money, but you CAN NOT take God out of my heart.

I won't be the first to say, "I prefer choice over change." Yet again I get neither. Good thing I have faith and complete trust in Him.
