Astrobiology from a Christian Perspective
Part I: Life, Space, Theology and Time
With National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) participation, the SETI Institute hosted The 5th Astrobiology Science Conference (AbSciCom 2008) in Santa Clara, California on April 14 - 17. For most of us not actively involved in the search for extra-terrestrial life (or intelligence), the subject has slipped into the background. The conference reminds us, however, that the search is still being actively pursued by academic and private organizations with NASA's Astrobiology Group acting as a research coordinator.
According to NASA and the SETI Institute, the study of Astrobiology addresses three basic questions: how does life begin and evolve, does life exist elsewhere in the universe, and what is the future of life on earth and beyond? Although these questions are being asked in a scientific context, the questions have provided the fodder for religious conversation and debate for thousands of years. The scientific and religious aspects will be addressed from a Christian perspective in this four part paper. In this part, I will define 'life' much as it has been defined in numerous other places but with an emphasis on life's functional aspects. This will be done so that we have a common ground when addressing the three questions. In Part Two, I will discuss the probability of finding alien life forms (NASA's second question); in Part Three, I will return to NASA's first question about how life begins and continues; and in the last Part, I will focus primarily on eschatology which is, ultimately, the third question posed by astrobiologists.
