I'm glad to find Thomas Hardy's poem "At the Railway Station" on your World Poetry Translation Project. But I have to correct the title, which should read "At the Railway Station, Upwey".
Upwey station is just south of Dorchester ("Casterbridge"), on the line to Weymouth ("Budmouth"). The convict might have been taken to Dorchester gaol (where poor Tess was hanged), or to Portland prison where in the mid 19th century convicts were transported to Australia. A short journey either way, and one with very little hope at the end of it.
Background knowledge enhances appreciation of this moving poem which, like most of Hardy's work, has the ring of authenticity. Upwey would have been a convenient station for Hardy's home, and he must have known it well.
I'm not being a smart alec here. Having grown up in rural Dorset, I worship Thomas Hardy.
